Dignity of Life Mission StatementThe mission of the Dignity of Life Ministry of Saint. Bernadette church is to promote and honor the dignity of life at every stage, guided by Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Catholic Church. We hope to inspire parishioners to respect for life at all stages from conception, through each day a breath is drawn to natural death through prayer, service, and education.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY volunteers assist in roofing, painting, vinyl siding work, plumbing, general maintenance, clean up, and providing food for the workers as needed on parish build projects. We participate every other year.

The Parish Twining ministry seeks to reach out to the international community with mutual prayer among parishioners from Saint Bernadette and Saint Louis de Gonzague of BonBon, Haiti as well as financial support. The satisfaction derived through compassion, service, and guided by our faith in God we gratefully reach to serve one another.

What's the Situation in Haiti?The government of Haiti struggles with political instability, weak rule of law, pervasive gang violence, and a fractured political landscape. Criminal gangs control much of the capital and key regions, undermining security and governance. Natural disasters frequently strike Haiti due to geographic location and environmental conditions, which repeatedly devastate the population and infrastructure, worsening poverty and impeding development. The Catholic Church in Haiti plays an important role in providing accessible education and promoting community development through a faith-based educational system that reaches some of the country’s most vulnerable people. Haiti has deep roots in the Catholic Church.What is the Twinning Ministry?The Saint Bernadette Parish Twinning Ministry (Haiti Ministry) is a long-standing partnership between Saint Bernadette and Saint Louis de Gonzague, an isolated, rural parish in Bon Bon, Haiti. Saint Louis de Gonzaga is located 8-10 miles (roughly 40 minutes) on rough roads from Jeremie, Haiti, and roughly 200 miles (7.5 hours by road in the best of times) from Port-au-Prince.Both parishes recognize that the first goal of parish twinning is to pray for one another so as to spread the good news of God, strengthen each other, and ground each other in Christ. The secondary purpose of the Haiti Ministry is for Saint Bernadette to provide financial assistance to Saint Louis de Gonzague Catholic Church and its elementary school, St. Veronica. Strengthening the church and school enhances its ability to respond to and solve its problems in the future.How are we helping?During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, Saint Bernadette provided $18,000 ($4,500) per quarter) to Saint Louis de Gonzague for the support of its church and school. The Saint Bernadette Haiti Ministry is in frequent communication with the pastor ot St. Louis de Gonzague to discuss how the quarterly donations are being used and what other needs may arise. For instance, this year, the final Starlink installation cost and Starlink maintenance/operating expenses were paid in addition to the regular payments. The purpose of the Starlink communication is to improve the timeliness of communications between the Saint Bernadette Haiti Ministry and Saint Louis de Gonzague, given the governmental, natural disaster, language, and other barriers to the Haiti Ministry.St. Louis de Gonzague has also been the recipient of Saint Bernadette’s IGiveCatholic (IGC) collection for the last two years. IGC funds are raised and expended for a stated purpose(s) and are accounted for separately from the Haiti Ministry donations. The funds are spent only for the stated purpose for which they were raised. In November 2024, IGC raised funds to rebuild and improve the school sanitation facilities and septic system, to improve the school kitchen, and to improve the school dining facilities. After completion and payment for the sanitation facilities and septic system, there is roughly $8,000 remaining to pay for completing the improvements to the school kitchen and the school dining facilities from IGC.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES are held numerous times each year. In addition to donating blood, volunteers are needed to register donors, assist Red Cross personnel, and serve refreshments.

If you or someone you know is in need of emergency financial assistance, please have them call our SVDP Chapter at 815-3113 and leave a message. A volunteer will respond within 24 hours.

Saint Bernadette's annual clothing drive for Holy Spirit Church in Jamestown, KY. collects ONLY gently used men's, women's, and children's clothing and shoes for the Thrift Store. Donated items can be dropped in the Church Narthex during the collection period. Any profits from the Thrift store are used to support the Social Ministry of Holy Spirit Church which helps the poor within the Jamestown community. DRIVERS are always NEEDED to help deliver collection.

"A sincere Thank You to our Jamestown Clothing Drive organizers: Charlie and Theresa O"Bryan, Don Kalmey, and Lee Ann Zwiebel for spearheading this very successful collection! Our 20-foot pod was completely filled. We had 16 drivers who took carloads of clothes and shoes via the scenic US 127 to Jamestown, Kentucky. Holy Spirit Catholic Chuch generates between $800 and $1,000 weekly for the community, namely donations to local charities for their needs. We couldn't have done this without the donations, the drivers, and the SMA 8th-grade volunteers! Once again...A BIG THANK YOU!"

St. John Center provides shelter, social services, and supportive housing for homeless men in our area. They are always in need of particular items for those they serve. We have an annual collection during Lent. Volunteers are needed to help collect and deliver collected items.

Saint Bernadette is a member of Eastern Area Community Ministry. EACM is located in the John Knox Presbyterian Church on Westport Road. EACM seeks to help those struggling to meet basic needs. Your time and talent, whether it is one-on-one or behind the scenes, means so much to clients. Volunteers are the backbone of the operations.
Time: Volunteer time varies depending on how much you would like to be involved.
Gifts and talents:- Food Pantry volunteers: stock shelves, prepare food orders (groceries bags are packed according to Dare to Care guidelines) or weigh in donated groceries from various sources.
- Office volunteers may be assigned a variety of tasks which may include front office (answering calls and welcoming clients), volunteers also do intakes or updates- this is simply completing a questionnaire that gathers general info such as number in household, income, etc. There is also emergency assistance - this involves helping the clients pay for a utility bill. Data entry is also needed. Training is provided to volunteers. General computer skills needed, very little.
- Meals on Wheels drivers are also needed.
